5 tips to get your kids back to school safely

Even in the most normal of times, there’s a lot to think about when you’re preparing to send your children back to school for the year. Throw in the COVID-19 factor, and it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. Get your kids back to school safely and confidently with the tips below from our care team.

Take it one day at a time

Do a daily assessment of your child’s health. Be sure to ask how they’re feeling each day. If they have symptoms indicating they’re contagious like cough, fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, keep them home from school until they’ve had no symptoms for 24 hours.

Communicate clearly

Maintain frequent contact with your child’s teacher, school leadership, and school nurse, and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Most schools now have education continuity plans to keep students on track if they miss assignments. If you’re a working parent, having a child sick day plan with your employer will make last-minute sick days infinitely easier to navigate.

Mask up

Masks have been proven to be effective in reducing transmission of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. As they have few side effects for most people, continuing mask usage in a school setting (especially for unvaccinated students) is a great way to mitigate in-school spread of COVID-19.

Keep up with hand hygiene

Frequent hand washing and sanitizing is a great way to combat all the germs your child will come into contact with in a school setting (including coronavirus). Make sure your kids are washing their hands for 20 seconds with soap and water. Choosing 20 seconds of a song to sing while washing hands is a great way to help little ones know how long to wash!

When in doubt, get swabbed

What parent hasn’t asked themselves, “Uh oh, does my child have COVID?” over the past year anytime they sneezed? Do yourself a favor and alleviate this anxiety by getting them tested if they are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Knowing whether they are COVID-positive will help you know exactly what steps to take next regarding their health and education.
