Four Meditations to Help You Work Mindfully (by Prezence)

Since March 2020, our work lives have changed forever. Staying connected to priorities, balancing work/personal life, and maintaining healthy habits are just some of the challenges we face. Focusing on your mindset can be a great place to start. Meditation is a helpful tool to reflect on where you are, how you feel, and align with the lifestyle you want to lead.

If you’re new to meditation, you are in the right place. The number one most important thing to remember is that if you are meditating, you are doing it right. Meditation has many forms and there is no “right or wrong” way to meditate. It’s okay if your mind is still busy, come back to your breath or the meditation guide’s voice when you feel distracted. You can complete meditation seated, lying down comfortably, or even walking in your neighborhood. Release all expectations before getting started, and simply commit to showing up as you are.

These meditations will help you prepare for meetings, release frustrations, energize yourself, and respond thoughtfully in work and in life.

Meditation for meetings

Connect to yourself before a big meeting, presentation or discussion. We all have something big coming up that’s weighing on us. Take a short break before your event to focus on the outcome that you’re looking for. This practice helps you pause, reflect, and breathe before showing up to meet with a colleague or group of colleagues. When we rush into a meeting without thinking about it, sometimes our words or thoughts aren’t as clear. This meditation will help you prepare thoughtfully and show up as well as you can.

Release frustration

Release stress and frustration in this quick breath practice. When frustration builds in the body, our minds can get cloudy. We can continue to get caught up in the loop of a particular emotion and waste valuable energy on something that no longer requires our full attention. Meeting your emotions directly helps you process events of your life more fully, and ensure that the emotion does not take over. Take a few minutes to breathe, release tension, and prepare to revisit whatever you are doing with a fresh perspective.

Energize yourself

Breath techniques are one of the simplest ways to influence your mood and regulate your nervous system. This practice guides you through two patterns of breathing to energize your body and mind whenever you need a boost of energy. When you lengthen the inhale and stabilize the exhale, you draw in more oxygen to your body leaving you feeling alert and alive. Please note, we do not recommend this practice if you are feeling anxious or emotionally activated.

Choose to respond

Imagine that you are in the middle of a challenging conversation or receive an email from a colleague that upsets you. How often is your impulse to immediately react without processing the situation fully? When an activating event occurs, your thoughts and beliefs influence the actions that you take, however the beliefs may not be based on the reality of the situation. Perhaps, you had an argument with a partner before work or you did not sleep well the night before. This simple practice helps you to create space between yourself and the situation to ensure you are viewing the situation clearly and acting accordingly.
